Abstract

Based on the literary heritage of Parland, his articles and letters, the dissertation reveals for the first time the Kaunas and Helsinki texts that were given meaning by the modernist, non-canonical Finnish-Swedish writer. The dissertation seeks to determine how Parlandâs works become the property of Finnish, Swedish, and Lithuanian cultures, how interacting cultures inspire new meanings, and what Helsinki and Kaunas texts are created.
Cultural semiotics is applied in the discussion of interaction between cultures: the work highlights the formation of text in the context of other texts, i.e. addressing the issue of text by the other becoming text by the self. Cultural anthropology also becomes a useful research tool, as it underlines the influence of oneâs own and another culture on a subjectâs thinking and the symbolization processes he performs.
Autonomous symbolism of separate cultures is revealed in Parlandâs works, which is defined by the contradictions between two cities â Kaunas and Helsinki. Kaunas space is shown as the place of motion and action, while Helsinki is shown as the memory of the days of the past, an attempt to solve old problems, and a search for the past life.
The research is new and relevant because for the first time in Lithuania, the work of a Finnish-Swedish author is examined in detail in the context of Lithuania. The results of the analysis can be used by scientists who conduct literaturological, culturological and comparative research. The work reveals the multiplicity of Parlandâs texts and the importance of the Lithuanian context. The research encompasses the history of Lithuanian literature, focuses on modernism studies, aspects of comparative literature.
