Abstract: The article focuses on the relationship between the individual and place in the novels by Lithuanian immigrant to France Valdas Papievis, „Vienos vasaros emigrantai“ (Emigrants of One Summer) (2003) and „Eiti“ (To Go) (2010), both written outside Lithuania. The comparative analysis foregrounds the emotional attachment of the individual to a place and the ways this attachment influences identity development. The analysis draws on Michel de Certeau’s ideas about the city as a text and metaphor. Benedict Anderson’s concept of “imagined communities” helps situate the communities represented in Papievis’ narratives in certain spaces and to highlight the various meanings attributed to them
