Abstract
The article represents a synopsis of prominent Belarusian scientist Schekatikhin’s works and activities (1896–1940). Не was a founder of Belarusian art history and theory and was repressed in the 30ties. You can become acquainted with his scientific heritage and his works, which are of value for current Belarusian art history. His major contribution to the study of Belarusian art is the method and methodology developed by him. As a result, he was the first in the Belarusian history to discover a new conception in the development of Belarusian art and to introduce periodization. He applied an all-round approach to the study of Belarusian culture and defined the path of the development of Belarusian architecture in the terms of world culture. His research on monumental painting was very important. The papers about the life and works of the first Belarusian printer Francis Scorina (1490–over 1541) occupy a significant part of his studies. He paid a great deal of attention to the personality of Scorina himself, on the design of his books and the style of his engravings, etc. Не spent a lot of time to collect and process the sources about the history of the belts of Slutsk. He noted the German and Czech influence in these works, as well as in the engravings of Scorina. The results of these and other researches of the scientist are documented in the studies of contemporary researchers. This paper is not exhaustive and does not represent the full scope of N. Schecatikhin’s scientific heritage, because of the strict limit on article size.
