Abstract

The object of this bachelor's thesis: child‘s relationship with death in the translations of Norwegian children‘s and adolescents‘ literature into the Lithuanian language in the 21st century. The aim of the work is to analyze how and what the relationship between child and death is depicted in modern Norwegian children's and adolescents‘ literature, specifically in Jostein Gaarder's short story "The Orange Girl", in Maria Paar's novel "Waffle Hearts", in Hilde Hagerup's novel "The Dandelion Song", in Håkon Øvreås short story ,,Brown”, in Maja Lunde's novel ,,The Snow Sister” and Bjorn Sortland's short story ,,What the Heart Remembers”. Research problem: how and what the child’s relationship with death is depicted in modern Norwegian children's and adolescents‘ literature in the translations into the Lithuanian language in the 21st century? The following methods were used in the work: absorbed data filtering method, analytical, comparative and hermeneutic. The analysis of the work was based on Maria Nagy's (1948) study of the concept of child death at different ages, a study by Norwegian psychologists Atle Dyregrov, Kari Dyregrov and Gunn Helen Søfting (2016), which depicts the involvement of Norwegian children in funeral rituals and other relevant research (David Sadler 1991, Aleksandra Srelcova 2013, etc.).
Discussing the results of the work, it was found that in the Norwegian children's and adolescents' literature, the child's relationship with death is depicted as realistically as possible, without embellishing the existing reality. Children are included in funeral rituals, which allow them to feel like "full-fledged" family members and to more easily experience the grief caused by the loss of a close family member (M. Lunde ,,The Snow Sister“, H. Øvreås ,,Brown“, M. Paar ,,Waffle Hearts“, etc.). In the analyzed works, children and adolescents acquire a mature concept of death by giving meaning to the memory of the deceased loved one with the help of certain attachment points and understanding that death is the inevitable end of every living organism (J. Gaarder ,,The Orange Girl“, H. Hagerup ,,The Dandelion Song“, B. Sortland ,, What the Heart Remembers“, etc.).
