Abstract

The struggle for independence at the beginning of the 20th century is one of the most important stages in the history of Lithuania. It was during this period, with the fall of the Russian Empire, that the state, which had spent more than 100 years under foreign oppression, regained its independence.
At that time Lithuania had to fight with its foreign enemies - the Bermontians and the Bolsheviks, as well as with the Communists sympathetic to the domestic Bolsheviks. In order to secure support in this struggle, it was necessary for the young state to show the rest of the world that it was waging a "just war". In the case of the Bermontians this was not complicated because they were not even considered a political force by the rest of the world. The situation was a bit more complicated in the case of the Russian Bolsheviks as they had support in Lithuania, but their actions and policies were not supported by the rest of the world. The most difficult case was with the Polish, as they had strong support from the French side. As a result, in order to gain international recognition and support, Lithuania had to be active in international politics and urgently look for allies. The information provided in the press had to show that the state not only exists, but also tries, following the example of other countries, to protect its territory and its inhabitants.
On the other hand, the propaganda position of the press somewhat distorted the objectivity of the published information. Bearing in mind national-patriotic interests this can be justified, but from a historical-political perspective it becomes clear that in order to get a more accurate and objective picture of the struggle for idependence, it is necessary to analyze not only patriotic but also communist press. It is also necessary to assess the attitudes of third parties, newspapers and their local correspondents, who did not support either side of the conflict and provided information that could be described as the most objective. That is why, as far as it was possible, the work reviewed Lithuanian and Bolshevik periodicals published in Lithuania and took an interest in American press.
All the above mentioned factors allows us to analyze the chosen issue - the reflections of the struggle for Lithuanian independence in the periodicals of 1918-1920 and obtain a clearer understanding of what was happening in Lithuania in 1918 - 1920.
