Abstract

This study aims to analyse Retrospective Interparental Relationship Quality and Attitudes towards Violence in Couple’s Relationship among Young Adults Association.
The study included 170 participants (144 women and 26 men), who met the criteria of age (18-35 years), having a romantic relationship for at least one year and a genetic family (growing up with both parents until the age of 10). The average age of participants was 22.6 years. 64 participants specified having an intimate partner but not living together. 57 indicated having an intimate partner and living together. 33 participants specified currently not having any romantic relationship but used to have it before, while 16 indicated having a spouse currently. The length of the romantic relationship varied from 1 to 20 years with an average length of 38.9 years. 148 participants indicated they were growing up with both their biological parents while 21 participant’s parents divorced or one of them deceased in participant’s adolescence years. One participant was growing up with not biological parents.
The study was conducted as the survey which was posted on social media “Facebook.” The survey consisted of two questionnaires: V. Čepukienė (2014) Retrospective Measure on Interparental Relationship Quality (IPRQ) and Fincham et al. (2008) Intimate Partner Violence Attitude Scale – Revised (IPVAS-R) questionnaire.
The study revealed that participants opinion about abuse in a couple's relationship (e.g. provoking jealousy, insulting) and about violence, in general, was more positive in male sample. In comparison, women treated violence in a relationship more positively when in their childhood they had seen the indifferent or detached relationship of their parents. Moreover, women who characterized their parent’s relationship quality more positively expressed a more negative opinion about violence in their relationship. Finally, results revealed that individuals who tend to use physical violence against their partner were more likely to have a positive opinion about violence in a relationship in general.
